5.3.1 The storming stage

Course subject(s) Module 5. Engineers as Team Leaders

The second stage of a work team is the storming stage.

The storming stage is a stage of conflict. After the initial forming stage, team members are now feeling more secure about their individual roles and it is clear what the group’s aims are. Furthermore, they feel safer among each other. This is the moment that they want to show their individual value. They might feel restricted by the boundaries of the team and want to do things their way, and thus is also ground for conflict.

In this subchapter, we will zoom into the causes and effects of three types of intra-team conflict: task conflict, process conflict and relationship conflict. Furthermore, we will discuss ways to manage conflict.
