W03a – Fundamentals
In this lecture, prof. Van Lier explains the fundamentals of biological wastewater treatment.
In the introduction of the lecture the role of biological processes in wastewater treatment plants is presented as well as the objectives for these processes. Thereafter the role of microorganisms is discussed based on the structure and metabolism of these microorganisms. The conversion of organic material is applied in wastewater treatment reactors, with its controlled kinetic conditions.
In the last part of the lecture these fundamentals are applied in the design of reactors, based on the slugde load or the food over biomass load.
