Earlier, we discussed the two cycles that together form the circular economy. In the schematic representation (also called ‘the butterfly diagram’) shown below, we can see that recycling is only one of several restorative activities that take place within the technical cycle. The inner loops in this diagram represent other activities for value retention, such as maintenance and repair, reuse, refurbishment, and re-manufacturing.
