In the previous modules we have discussed the reasons why Incrementality and Typology Mix are key approaches for the design of adequate housing. Now it’s time to discuss the last design strategy of our trilogy: clustering. In this module we will focus on clustering as a design strategy to create meaningful communities.

At the end of this module, you should be able to:

• Identify key historical references and contributions to the development of clustering as a strategy for the design of mass housing.
• Understand how clustering can contribute to create more liveable and humane habitats.
• Recognize the potential of using clustering as a design strategy to articulate the social and spatial practices of an individual with those of a larger community.

To illustrate clustering as a design strategy for mass housing, we will invite you to join us in an analytical study of the Dar Lamane Housing project in Casablanca, Morocco designed in the early 1980s by Abderrahim Charai and Abdelaziz Lazrak. We will analyze how this low-income residential community built for 25,000 people, and consisting of over 4,000 units, makes use of an ingenious clustering of four-and five story apartment blocks, organized around a large central square in which the mosque, markets and festival hall are located.
