1.4.1 Legal Considerations

Course subject(s) Module 1. Governance and Regulatory Framework

  • The legal risks in SSC involving information security, privacy, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) ;
  • The legal protection in SSC and the legal principles related;
  • The technological protection of privacy in Smart Cities and the concepts of “Privacy by Design” and “Privacy by Default.”

Legal Competences for SSC

Main Takeaways

  • The most important legal challenge facing smart cities is to protect the privacy of citizens’ information in a technological and legal trust framework that allows the design of technologies that effectively protect data and successfully face cyber-attacks on the IT infrastructure of cities.
  • The legal principles that can be implemented in cities to protect the privacy and personal data of citizens are: to balance the design of smart technologies between the operation of the service and the rights of the user; obtain people’s consent to change the predetermine settings of the system and ensure the anonymity of the data owner when aggregating data.
