Mart van der Meijden

Mart A.M.M. van der Meijden is a full professor at the Delft University of Technology in the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy, which is part of the university’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, and Computer Science since 2011. His chair is Large-Scale Sustainable Power Systems. He lectures Power Systems of the Future to MSc students and his research team is working on various outstanding (inter-)national research projects. Since 2003, he is working with TenneT, the first European cross-border Transmission System Operator. With Vision2030 he was responsible for the development of the TenneT long-term vision on the electrical transmission system. Since 2009 Mart is the Manager of Innovation for TenneT in the Netherlands and Germany. In 2015, Mart took the initiative to design the innovative North Sea Wind Power Hub integrating offshore wind, subsea HVDC interconnection, and in the long run conversion to H2.

Mart received his M.Sc. degree (cum laude) in Electrical Engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, the Netherlands, in 1981. From 1982 to 1988 he worked with ASEA/ABB in the field of process automation. In 1986 he designed the world’s first distributed (micro-process computer-based) high-speed emergency load shedding system for large refineries, The concept was for more than 20 years part of the ABB portfolio. For the last 30 years, he has been working with different Dutch energy companies on the transmission and the distribution of gas, district heating, and electricity. In different strategic and operational management positions, he has been involved in a wide variety of development initiatives such as grid technology innovation, implementation of sustainable energy, development of new organizational strategies, and implementation of asset management.
