2.5.1 Future energy systems towards 2050

Course subject(s) 2. Flexibility Through Energy Storage & Demand Side Management

“We must continue research into new forms of energy and into more efficient use of existing energy sources.”

-Mac Thornberry, former American poltician

To make our energy systems completely fossil free, it is essential to also look for other forms of energy besides electricity. Instead of storing energy electrically, the energy can as be stored chemically in molecules. This concept is called “Power-to-X-to-Power” and is discussed in this lecture. The need and the definition are explained, and the concept is applied to three different molecules.
