1.2.1 Gas, solid and liquid waste
Course subject(s)
1. Industrial sources of emissions and mitigation options
In this video, we will examine our pulp mill case study as the selected industry example, analysing its mass balance (input and output streams) and the various sub-systems that constitute it. Ultimately, we will discuss important features in the understanding of the overall environmental impact of an industrial plant.
Key takeaways:
- There are different types of effluents (not only CO2 as main gas emission); gas wastes, liquid wastes and solid wastes
- It is important to “close the mass balance” to appropriately evaluate the environmental impact of an industrial plant
- “Closing the mass balance” is needed to appropriately evaluate potential improvements in an industrial plant (i.e. reducing the use of fossil fuels)
