1.5.1 Case Study Fastned

Now that we have learnt about all the aspects of EV charging infrastructures, let us now look at how it is done in the real world. For this, we will have a case study with Fastned (www.fastned.nl) and meet with CEO Bart Lubbers. Fastned, founded in 2012, is now the market leader of highway fast charging in The Netherlands. With over 200 stations on highway locations, they attempt to relief electric car owners from range anxiety. They offer both 50kW and 175kW fast charging stations and prepare for a move to 350kW charging stations in the future. Now let us discuss with Bart and learn more about how to operate a business revolving around electric vehicle charging.

The following topics are discussed:

      • The vision of Fastned
      • The unique selling points of Fastned
      • Why does Fastned focus on fast and not slow charging?
      • What are the main cost and revenue streams as a charging point operator?
      • What are the main barriers (organizational/technological/institutional/commercial) in operating fast charging stations?
