1.5.1 Renewable resources and technologies

Course subject(s) 1. Industrial sources of emissions and mitigation options

In this video we will introduce potential challenges and impacts of defossilising material and energy flows in an industrial plant. We will identify promising alternative materials and technologies, which can contribute to a less fossil-intensive production of products and energy.

Key takeaways:

  • Industry may be difficult to decarbonise; efforts are on defossilising industry
  • There are different alternative carbon sources (for instance, biomass) and technologies used for the production of heat, power and fuels (for example, thermochemical and biochemical routes)
  • By-products and wastes within an industrial process can be recovered and used to decrease fossil fuel consumption
