1.5.1 Role of Microgrids

Course subject(s) 1. Integration of Renewables Into the Electricity Grid

In the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy, the generation side will change from centralized to decentralized. You can think of solar panels being installed on your roof. Because the location of generators is different in this case, the structure of the electric grid has to change. In order to integrate renewables into the grid, so-called microgrids play a role. Microgrid can be considered as the building blocks of a power network where renewables are integrated. This lecture will discuss what a microgrid is and what the functionalities of it are.
