Course week(s) 1. Newton’s Laws and Fictitious Forces

The course starts with the explanation of the three laws of Newton. Motion with respect to inertial reference frames is discussed. Thereafter, motion with respect to non-inertial reference frames is discussed. This motion brings along fictitious forces (also called d’Alembert forces): apparent forces that only act on masses in non-inertial frames of reference. An example of a non-inertial frame of reference is a rotating frame of reference.

During this module, two sample problems are discussed (see exercises below).
