2.3.2 The design of a recyclable cola bottle

Course subject(s) Module 2. Recycling of Packaging

Next, Robert Seegers will discuss the design of recyclable cola bottles. Earlier in this episode we have discussed considerations involved in the implementation of a recycling strategy. Let’s see how many design guidelines are taken into account in this design.

MAIN TAKEAWAYS

  • Knowledge of the sorting process is used in the design of the bottle: the glue is soluble in water, the material for the cap (PE) and label (PP) have lower densities than water and will float, while the material of the bottle (PET) has a higher density and will sink.
  • Coca-Cola is gradually increasing the amounts of recycled material in their bottles, as they don’t want to make concessions on the quality of their packaging.
  • Proper collection of the packaging waste is regarded as main challenge in closing the circular loop.
