2.4.1 Smart buildings

Course subject(s) 2. Electricity use in buildings

In this video we will explore the potential of so called smart building technology. The idea behind smart buildings is that there is a huge, and largely untapped, potential to realize energy saving in buildings through the smarter use of available data. As you will see this technology is very promising.

Key takeaways:

  1. Even in the most modern non-residential buildings, 10% to 30% of energy is wasted due to malfunctioning installations and unexpected user behavior
  2. The combination of more building data with smarter control methods provides the means to achieve significant energy savings
  3. According to the IEA, digitization could cut total energy use in residential and commercial buildings between 2017 and 2040 by as much as 10%
