3.2.4 HOMIE Case study

Course subject(s) Module 3: Repair

With a pay-per-use business model, Homie seeks to generate growth by offering services. David Peck explores in the following interview, what causes paying for individual washes and how such a model is likely to affect the design process of the products.

  • Pay-per-wash: People becoming more aware of how, how often, and when they use their machine
  • Lower price by using less energy
  • Business-model is made to reduce waste due to the benefit of long lasting machines, which can be upgraded (to learn more, you may also take a look at the module on “Reuse“)
  • Service and upgrading by the customers themselves would be ideal and would save a lot of money
  • Pay-per-use has an impact on the usage, and will have on the design process
  • Major difficulty to start a business like this is the large financial demand for purchasing the machines before they can be rented
