3.4.1 Renewable resource assessment
Course subject(s)
3. Climate-neutral electricity: the pivotal role of renewables
What are renewable energy potentials and how are they determined. In this video we look at the different types of renewable energy potentials to understand which renewables have the largest resources, where they can and cannot be materialized, and what to look out for when encountering potentials in media.
Key takeaways:
- There are different types of potentials with increasingly restrictive criteria
- Renewables can be land-use intensive and sites must be chosen carefully
- Potentials strongly depend on underlying assumptions and methods, so transparency and consistency are key
- Stay critical when encountering potentials in media, as their definition and scope, as well as the underlying methods and assumptions are not always clear
