3.4.3 Michael Dukakis

Course subject(s) Module 3. Debating methods: Framing models for debating

Presidential elections were held in America in 1988. The Democratic candidate was Michael Dukakis. He is an outspoken opponent of the death penalty. At the time, many Americans were in favour of the death penalty. His wife was Kitty Dukakis.

You will see a short video of a debate in the middle of the campaign between Dukakis and his republican opponent George Bush sr. Michael Dukakis was asked a very straightforward question: if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would he then be in favour of the death penalty for the perpetrator?

Watch the next video and reflect on it by answering the questions.
