Question 3: Competition – Biological processes

In a biological system we have two different dominant micro-organisms, organism 1 has a maximum growth rate of 1 d-1 and a substrate affinity of 5 mg/l and organism 2 with a maximum growth rate of 0.5 d-1 and a oxygen affinity of 1mg/l.

  • Which organism will be dominant at a substrate concentration of 15 mg/l? and at 0.1 mg/l?
  • What is the substrate concentration at which both organism will have the same growth rate?
  • If you operate a WWTP and you need to have a dominance of organism 2, in order to get the requested conversions, what would you advice the operator?
