4.1.1 Consumer engagement in collection
Course subject(s)
Module 4 Futureproof Design for Recycling
Securing a flow of products fosters the control of the quality, volume and timing necessary for circular processing. Eliminating hibernation in drawers and stimulating the systematic return of electronics is essential to maintain as much utility and value from the materials, components and products over time.
Flora Poppelaars researched how the collection of devices can be increased in a circular economy during her Ph.D. at Delft University of Technology. In the following video, she will share some insights on how to improve the consumer engagement when designing collection solutions.

Main takeaways
- As consumers own most of their electronics, these products’ path after use depends on what consumers do with them. A lot of dynamic and interconnected factors influence their decision-making process and behaviour.
- The field on designing valuable collection solutions for consumers is growing and specialised methods and tools are being developed. Ideally, consumers in the future will know as many collection points as purchase points.
