4.5.1 Case study: Nuna

The Nuon Solar Team consists of 10 full-time students from Delft University of Technology coming from various backgrounds, such as Technical Policy and Management, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Applied Earth Sciences. The goal of the Nuon Solar Team is to show the world what is possible in the area of high-end technology and sustainable energy. To achieve this, they participate every year in a car race where the cars are powered by solar energy.

In October 2017, they won the World Solar Challenge in Australia which is a biennial solar race through Australia where 3000 km must be covered as quickly as possible. They also participate in the Sasol Solar Challenge in South Africa which is a 8-day race through the changeable landscape of South Africa. During this race, teams are allowed to plan their route from A to B and whoever has covered the most kilometers at the end, is the winner.

The team works closely with companies and the Delft University of Technology. For a year and a half, the current will be engaged in (further) developing the latest technology to make their newest solar car, Nuna 9, even better and hopefully to win in the next race in South Africa.
