Question 6: Bulking sludge
Bulking sludge is sludge with extremely bad settling characteristics and is often characterized by the presence of abundant filamentous micro-organisms. The growth of this sludge can be suppressed by the application of high loading rates, for example in a so called selector. Explain the function of such a selector, and use a graph to illustrate the mechanism.
