5.4.1 Microbial biosurfactants: hurdles and opportunities

Course subject(s) Module 5. Biobased products: Biosurfactants

You are becoming quite an expert now! Good for you!

Now that you know the different types of biosurfactants, if you agree, we will zoom in on a fairly new and exciting commercial type of a biologically produced biosurfactant; microbial biosurfactants. You will learn about some examples of already commercialized microbial biosurfactants and their advantages and might, hopefully, be able to already find them back on some of the labels of products you use in your daily lives (if not, run to the supermarket please!). You might find out that these products are typically a bit more expensive compared to ‘traditional’ products. You will learn why this is the case and learn about a strategy to overcome these hurdles. This strategy (the ‘integrated bioprocess design’ approach) will also be further explained in the next two submodules, 5.5 and 5.6.
