5.6.1 Life cycle of metals: The role of the process industry

Course subject(s) Module 5. Track I – Technical Solutions

Earlier in the course, you were introduced to the basics of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Now, being in the “technical track”, we look at this in detail from a view from industry practice: from optimisation of raw materials processing to full life cycle assessments. You will learn about technical dependencies and metallurgical limitations, about software tools to maximise efficiency and minimise environmental impacts, and about engineering the optimal process design.

The environmental footprint of raw materials depend on a lot of factors, and the process industry plays a key role in this. In this first part, Antti will elaborate more on this.
