Lecture 6A: Aircraft Noise

Welcome to the final module of the course! This module we will take a step back from the aircraft itself, and consider the ecosystem in which it operates: airlines, air traffic control, and airport ground operations. In addition, we will take a more detailed look at some of the detrimental effects of aircraft.

Next to emissions related to fuel and propulsion, aircraft are a source of another type of emission: noise. Aircraft noise is generally considered a form of noise pollution, and is a very major factor to consider when operating aircraft in the real world. Therefore, limiting the amount of aircraft noise is another aspect of sustainable aviation.

In this lecture, Prof. Mirjam Snellen will touch upon noise levels, the main noise sources on an aircraft, which models can be used to study aircraft noise and which design trends resulted in less aircraft noise.
