Course subject(s) Module 7 – Urban Food&Green: The Use of Urban Spaces

Urban Greenhouses: What Roles for Citizens?

From citizens co-creating the food system of Hanoi, we will now switch to urban agriculture and to the recent phenomenon of Urban Greenhouses in particular. Increasing urbanization of course involves people migrating to cities, but because these people need to eat, there is a related movement of food to cities. Cities search for ways to feed themselves and urban agriculture is among the things they look at. One of the ways to produce food in cities is by growing food vertically, in so-called Urban Greenhouses. Jan-Willem van der Schans will give an introduction to urban agriculture in general and then focus on Urban Greenhouses. He will question what exactly these greenhouses have to do with cities and the people living in them. What roles can or should citizens have in urban greenhouses? What do you think?
