In this week’s videos, Birgit Hausleitner and Claudiu Forgaci present one last example of the Dutch planning practice: the “Room for the River” project. In the words of Claudiu, projects like these require a multi-scalar understanding: from the region, to the architectural scale. But this does not only apply to design. We need to be aware that governance bodies are multi-scalar as well: municipalities, provinces, water boards, national governments, etc. all have different spatial scopes and responsibilities. Small scale interventions often have regional consequences and vice versa, spanning different layers of governance. Good urban design acknowledges (and uses!) these interdependencies.
