Flight mechanics 4 – Climbing & gliding flight; Flight envelope

Course week(s) Week 9

In this lecture Dr. Ir. M. Voskuijl continues his lecture on climbing flight. At the start of the lecture the power equation is derived, which expresses a relation between the power of an aircraft and the change in potential and kinetic energy. Next two cases of gliding flight are considered; minimum rate of descent, and maximum gliding distance. The next subject in this lecture is climbing flight, where the expression for the maximum rate of climb is derived for jet aircraft. Next the flight envelope is explained, a diagram of altitudes and airspeeds an aircraft can fly in. The next subject is the operational limits of an aircraft, where they come from, and how to determine them.
