Course subject(s) S06 – Special topics / Recent advances

In this lecture, PhD researcher Remi Schilperoort presents two special topics in sewerage: Illicit connections between storm water drainage and foul water systems, and Influent peaks at wastewater treatment plants.
The drawbacks of illicit connections between stormwater en foulwater drainage systems are explained, followed by methods for detection of these connections. Special focus is given on the use of Distributed Temperature Sensing with fiber-optics.
Variations of incoming flows at a wastewater treatment plant are analysed based on one year of continuous in-sewer monitoring of flow and quality. Special attention is given to the flow during dry and wet weather periods.
