Systems Analysis

Course subject(s) 2. Systems Analysis

Systems Analysis

This tutorial explains the basics of applying systems analysis for problem structuring. It explains the functions of systems analysis, how to construct a system diagram, how it relates to a scorecard, how to check for completeness and consistency, and the kinds of conclusions you may draw from it. The tutorial starts with the mono-actor perspective (clips 1A and 1B), and then extends this to the multi-actor situation.

Below are three tutorial videos of this module, as well as the slides that are used in the videos.

Systems Analysis for Problem Structuring, part 1A: the mono-actor perspective

You have chosen a problem demarcation and determined the criteria that are important to your problem owner. This clip explains the basics of the systems analysis taking the perspective of a single problem owner. It explains how to construct a system diagram, how it relates to the scorecard, how to check for completeness and consistency, and the kinds of conclusions you may draw from it.

Systems Analysis for Problem Structuring : part 1A: the mono-actor perspective

Systems Analysis for Problem Structuring, part 1B: the mono-actor perspective – example

You have chosen a problem demarcation and determined the criteria that are important to your problem owner. This clip uses the example of wind power at sea to illustrate  the basics of the application of systems analysis as explained in clip 1A.

Systems Analysis for Problem Structuring : part 1B: the mono-actor perspective - example

Systems Analysis for Problem Structuring, part 2: the multi-actor perspective

The previous clips in this tutorial discussed the use of systems analysis in a mono-actor situation. In this clip, we move from a mono- to a multi-actor situation. The clip explains how to use systems analysis in a multi-actor situation and illustrates this with the example of wind power at sea.

Make sure to watch this clip when you have finished the tutorial about actor analysis and before you move on to the tutorial on synthesis and storyline.
