W01 – Introduction – Wastewater engineering: an overview

Course subject(s) W01 – Introduction – Wastewater engineering: an overview

In this lecture, prof. Van Lier introduces the lectures on Wastewater treatment.
First an overview is given of the ‘world of wastewater treatment’ with its terminology, regulations, effluent requirements for health and environment, organizations and costs.
Then the flow rates and influent quality at the wastewater treatment plant are presented, with more detailed explanation of the main wastewater quality parameters (BOD, COD, O2, N and P). Thereafter the basic setup of wastewater treatment plants is discussed, for different treatment levels and different technologies.
The lecture ends with actual topics and trends.
