Course subject(s) 0. Getting started with Modern Distributed Systems

Jan Rellermeyer

Jan Rellermeyer (Instructor)

Jan S. Rellermeyer is a full professor in the Faculty for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Leibniz University Hannover and head of the Dependable and Scalable Software Systems section. His current research focus is on finding better ways to analyze big data on modern computers and data center infrastructure. Jan is project lead for the Eclipse Concierge project, a small-footprint implementation of the OSGi Core Specification Release 5 targeted at mobile and embedded devices.

Prior to coming to Delft, Jan was a researcher at IBM Research in Austin, TX and an adjunct assistant professor at The University of Texas at Austin where he taught operating systems and programming languages classes. He received his MSc and PhD from ETH Zurich.

Alexandru Iosup

Alexandru Iosup (Instructor)

Alexandru Iosup is full professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU) in the Netherlands. He is the tenured chair of the Massivizing Computer Systems research group at the VU and visiting researcher at TU Delft. He is also elected chair of the SPEC-RG Cloud Group.

His work in distributed systems and ecosystems has received prestigious recognition, including membership in the (Young) Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences of the Netherlands, the Netherlands ICT Researcher of the Year award, and a PhD from TU Delft. His leadership and innovation in education led to various awards, including the prestigious Netherlands Higher-Education Teacher of the Year.

Alexandru has received a knighthood for cultural and scientific merits.

Sobhan Khorasani

Sobhan Omranian Khorasani (Course moderator)

Sobhan is staff member of the Distributed Systems Group of the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science at Delft University of Technology.  Immediately after completing his Masters of Science he moved to the Netherlands where he has been conducting research at TU Delft since 2018. His main interest is making big data systems more efficient.

As well as moderating and creating elements of this course, Sobhan is currently mainly focused on investigating the current and upcoming challenges of pervasive data processing and present directions for designing the next generation of large-scale data processing systems. In his most recent lines of research, Sobhan worked extensively with the Apache Spark codebase in order to explore opportunities for improving its performance.
