2.5.4 Main Takeaways on Data Collection

Course subject(s) Module 2. Phases & Methods of Scientific Research

Interviews

Interviews

Interviews are introduced as one of the main qualitative method of data collection.

In interviews you should determine:

  • if you pre-specify all questions,
  • what kind of answers you will collect,
  • how you will transcribe the interviews,
  • what coding scheme you will use to analyse the text you get from the transcription and other components.

In general, there are a variety of approaches for doing interview from really open interviews for exploration to very standardized ways of coding interview data. Do not underestimate the role of the interviewer in the process

Questionnaires

InterviewsQuestionnaires are one of the main quantitative methods of data collection and can either be based on standard inventories or created by you. Either way,  you should consider  standard issues such as:

  • the number of alternatives you give,
  • how these alternatives are named and designed,
  • what type of questions you use such as: open ended questions, sentence completion, multiple choice, checkbox alternatives, etc..
