3.0.1 Introduction

Course subject(s) Module 3. Electrification of Transportation

Welcome to module 3 of this course. In this week we will discuss the economics of switching to electric cars from an automaker perspective. Firstly we will see that electric vehicles are not just simply electrified cars. Using several examples we will show that electrifying the car means redesigning many more aspects of the car and that the focus will shift to different design aspects as well. Electrification also means digitization, a change that can have an even greater impact on automobile industry. In the following weeks we will focus on the aspects that will change with electrifying the vehicles and how for example this will change the production process. In the third week we will shift the focus to the supply chain and show the demand for electric vehicles is most likely not the bottleneck in fast adoption. In the last lecture we take a deeper look at the after sales market. How will dealerships and repair shops have to prepare for electric vehicles?

The module ends with a case study from VDL, an automotive company which was one of the first to bring an electric bus to the market. The case elaborates on the design changes electrification of vehicles brings.

And now, let’s dive straight into the content. We hope you will have a successful learning experience!
