Module 3: Typology Mix: Global Housing Design
In the previous module you gained some insights into incrementality as a key aspect for housing design. In this module we will discuss another key aspect: the importance of typology mix for the design of inclusive housing settlements.
At the end of this module, you should be able to:
-
- Identify different housing types considering the urban ensemble, the configuration of the residential building and the spatial organization of the dwelling.
- Understand the correlation between housing types and the social, economic and environmental factors that characterize a specific context.
- Recognize the importance of typology mix for the development of inclusive dwelling communities.
We will unpack the concept of type and typology mix and then look in detail to the case of Shushtar New Town, a project designed by the Iranian architect, Kamran Diba. Shushtar was designed to house 30,000 industrial workers along the principles of traditional urban patterns typically found in old Iranian towns and cities. In this project, an interwoven urban fabric built in (mud) brick construction houses a diverse set of dwelling types that at the same time are carefully orchestrated in a master plan consisting of gardens, paved squares, covered and shaded resting places, arcades and bazaars.
The discussion on Typology Mix and the Shushtar case study will probably give you a different perspective to look into the built environment in the place where you live. We hope you enjoy this module.
