4.2.2 Reading material

Course subject(s) Module 4. Affordability

This module’s reading material consists of 5 articles, that each has their own value to this case.

  1. Eskom crisis: Why the lights keep going out in South Africa.
This article gives a new introduction to the case, written by the BBC.
  2. Energy bidding strategies for restructured electricity market.
Interesting parts of this article: the abstract, introduction and power trading in world markets. Gives an idea about different structures (regarding governance of the electricity sector) in different countries. It shows also that a lot of countries create markets in the electricity sector (as opposed to South Africa, where there is one state company).
  3. Load shedding
Eskom’s explanation of what is and why do we use it about load shedding.
  4. Tackling urban energy poverty in South Africa
Some more general background information on the situation
  5. Ted Blom on energy poverty in South Africa
In this video, Ted Blom, an energy expert from South Africa, explains more about load shedding and Eskom’s activities.
