5.1.1 About this module Global Perspectives

Course subject(s) Module 5: Global Perspectives: Global Housing Design

In the previous modules we have taken you to a deep dive into incrementality, typology mix and clustering. We have discussed some of the reasons why these design strategies are important to mitigate the current and future challenge of designing adequate housing for a sustainable urban future. In each of the thematic modules we have analyzed a particular case study in detail, and revealed some of the key design-decisions that make that case a reference for all of those interested in housing design. Now, we will expand our scope and set up a more global perspective on how these three themes have been used in housing design around the world.

At the end of this module you should be able to:

  • Understand how incrementality, typology mix and clustering are used as a design approach to enhance the living conditions of urban communities in different geopolitical contexts.
  • Recognize design approaches that can contribute to the development of adequate housing in different parts of the world.
  • Compare the characteristics of housing schemes designed by different architects taking account of different social, political and geographical contexts.

To expand the knowledge about these three themes and relate them with wider societal problems, each thematic global perspective will be complemented with a lecture included in the UN-Habitat Global Urban Lecture series.

Let’s go for this global tour of housing!
