Readings

On this page you can find all readings complementary to the course. The lectures are primarely based on the book Introduction to bed, bank and shore protection, but all books given below are recommended for the overall understanding of the course. In the additional papers section some papers are added that have been provided during the lecture.

Introduction to bed, bank and shore protection

The interface of land and water has always played an important role in human activities. Settlements are often located at coasts, river-banks or deltas. Harbours, waterways, dikes, dunes and beaches, structures for water-control and water-resources management etc. are examples of hydraulic engineering on a macro-scale. In this book, the interface is studied on a micro-scale. The occurring phenomena are important in all branches of hydraulic engineering.

In a natural situation, the interface moves freely with the forces of erosion and sedimentation. Actually, nothing is wrong with erosion, until some interest is threatened. Erosion is somewhat like weed: as long as it is in nobodies way, no action is needed or even wanted. There should always be a balance between the efforts of protection against erosion and the damage that would occur otherwise.

Moreover, it should be realised that once a location is protected along a coast or riverbank that is eroded on a large scale, the protected part can induce extra erosion and in the end the whole coast or bank has to be protected. So, look before you leap, should be the motto.

In many cases however, a protection is necessary: bottom protection behind outlet structures or around objects, revetments in rivers and canals, dike protection, coastal defence works etc.

The Rock Manual: The Use of Rock in Hydraulic Engineering

In 1991 CIRIA/CUR produced the Manual on the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering, commonly referred to as “The Rock Manual” (CIRIA, 1991). CUR/RWS updated the book in 1995 to include the use of rock in dams, fluvial engineering and construction (CUR, 1995). Two French reference books were produced in the late 1980s: Le dimensionnement des digues à
talus (EDF R&D, 1987) and Les Enrochements (LCPC/CETMEF, 1989). Since publication of these earlier reference texts significant research has been done to improve understanding of rock behaviour and to determine improved practices for hydraulic engineering. Consequently, this manual has been developed to bring the earlier publications up to date and has been
given a broader scope that increases the focus on environmental and sustainability concerns.

This publication is available in English and French language as both a book and a CD-Rom. The material can also be downloaded from the CIRIA and CETMEF websites (www.ciria.org &www.cetmef.equipement.gouv.fr). A large number of equations from
this manual are included in the software package CRESS, which is free to download from the website:www.cress.nl.

Dikes and Revetments

Low-lying countries, such as the Netherlands, are strongly dependent on good and safe sea defences. In the past, the design of dikes  and revetments was mostly based on vague experience, rather than on general valid calculation methods. The demand for reliable  design methods for protective structures has, in the Netherlands, resulted in increased research in this field. These contributions have  been prepared by Dutch experts participating in the study groups of the Technical Advisory Committee on Water Defences. The book opens with an outline of general strategy and methodology on sea defences, illustrated in the following chapters by technical  information on specific items and Dutch experience, and it ends with more general aspects such as probabilistic approach, integral  (multifunctional) design, management & safety assessment. Together, these chapters provide an almost complete technical overview of  the items needed for the design and maintenance of dikes and revetments. The enclosed CRESS-program allows for an initial estimation of hydraulic loads and preliminary design.

Geosynthetics and Geosystems in Hydraulic and Coastal Engineering

A review of the existing applications of geosynthetics and geosystems in hydraulic and coastal engineering, with an overview on  material specifications, structural components, relevant tools during conceptual and detail design, possible applications, and execution aspects. A more detailed description is given of new or lesser-known systems and applications. Additional basic information on design methodology and geosynthetics is included to provide a basic framework of information for design purposes.

Grass covers on dikes and slope protections

A grassed clay dike revetment is one of the types of revetments used with the aim of preventing erosion of a dike by braking waves. In fact it is, measured as the dike surface area, the type of revetment which is applied most. The grass not only protects against erosion but may have a number of other functions, e.g. agricultural (fodder forcattle), ecological and recreational. Sometimes the grass cover is used for traffic.
