2.1.2 Overview : The momentum balance

Course subject(s) 2. The momentum balance

This week also introduces you to a new balance: the momentum balance. The momentum balance is related to the mass en velocity of objects in a specific direction, so can be combined with mass and energy balance. In the first chapter you will learn to define the momentum balance. In chapter 2 and 3 an introduction to pressure drop by means of a force balance and the definition of the friction factor for tubes, bends and other pipe connections will be given.

After this week, you can know aboutĀ the concepts of shear stress, the velocity gradient and the pressure gradient and you can deduce the Fanning equation using the definition of the friction factor and the momentum balance. Finally, you can calculate the energy loss of a straight pipe and a pipe with pumps and valves.
