Pre 1.1 Introduction

Course subject(s) Pre-knowledge Mathematics

This unit allows you to review some concepts from statistics that will be used throughout the course. You may want to review this before the start of Module 1 of the EdX course “Observation Theory: Estimating the unknown”, but it is also designed as a convenient source of reference to be used throughout the course.

The topics are:

  1. Deterministic and random variables
  2. Histograms and probability density functions
  3. Mean and variance
  4. Normal distribution

You are expected to be familiar with these topics before Module 1.2 on Quality and Types of Errors.
