Dr.ir. Laurens de Vries

Laurens de Vries (1967) is a head teacher at the TU Delft. He works in the field of wholesale electricity market design, with a focus on the long-term development of European electricity markets and their interactions with markets for natural gas and CO2. Laurens has been working with the Energy and Industry Section since 1999. In 2004, he obtained his Ph.D. Degree on the topic of electricity generation adequacy. Laurens received his Mechanical Engineering Degree from Delft University Technology in 1991. After graduating he moved to Olympia, Washington State, USA. He enrolled part-time in the Master of Environmental Studies program at The Evergreen State College, from which he graduated in 1996. Concurrently he held traineeships at local governments and in the last few years there he worked as an assistant planner in the Public Transportation and Rail Division of the Washington State Department of Transportation. Between the summers of 1997 and 1998 he traveled through Asia, after which he returned to the Netherlands. Before returning to Delft he worked for a year at NovioConsult in Nijmegen , an environmental consulting firm that specializes in advising local governments. Laurens is secretary of the Benelux Association for Energy Economics, (BAEE) which was re-established in 2012.
