Deze eerste lezing is een introductie op het onderwerp van stedenbouwkunde en water. Enkele basisbegrippen van de relatie tussen het landschap en stedenbouwkunde komen aan bod. De topografische kaart wordt toegelicht en de meest voorkomende landschapstypen aangegeven. De vorming van het landschap zal worden geïllustreerd met behulp van historische kaarten. De lezing concentreert zich op de gebieden Den Haag – Delft – Rotterdam.
