1.3.1 EU policy
Course subject(s)
Module 1. Urgency and challenges with CRM and waste
We have seen in lesson 1.3 on the mining of critical raw materials, that the European Union is dependent on these materials. In this lesson Sophie Sfez shows what the policy of the European Union is in this matter.
Sophie Sfez (PhD, 2018) has a background in agronomy and environmental science. She worked on several European projects, including the MEASURE (Metrics for Sustainability Assessment in European Process Industries), REPAIR (Resource Management in Peri-urban Areas: Going Beyond Urban Metabolism) and several educational projects in the EIT Raw Materials program. She supervises master thesis students as well as teaches courses on clean technology and air pollution.
Main take aways
- Europe is highly depend on imports of CRMs
- Europe is setting two strategies to insure its supply in critical raw materials
- One strategy is to implement measures to develop circular economy in the EU
- The other strategy is to set up diplomatic agreements with CRMs-supplying countries outside Europe
