Policy Analysis of Multi-Actor Systems.Assignement
Course subject(s)
1. Course Introduction
Urbanization is a major challenge to governments around the world and in many countries it is a major problem nowadays. In many developing countries large numbers of people migrate to the major cities in the hope to get a better life: access to work, income, services. Often there is little work and huge shanty towns come into existence and parallel economies spring up.
Urbanization is a worldwide phenomenon, so you are allowed to pick any densely populated area in the world to analyse the problem. The assignment of writing an issue paper focuses on problem exploration, problem formulation, the formulation of research questions, and drafting a research proposal. Following the modules given in the lecture, you will learn how to solve problems step by step.
Assignment: Issue paper on sustainable urbanization
The document below contains the assignments that we have been working on during classes. Active participation in classes and making assignments (you can find these in lectures) will get you prepared for writing your issuepaper. Each assignment will provide you with a basic ingredients or insight, which you will use in the final report (the issuepaper).

Understanding the drivers of Public Health in Slums-by Enrique Backhaus C and Meriem Bourada
There are two major shortcomings in current healthcare systems: Insufficient recognition of (1) the human dimension in health and (2) of the need to tailor the health service’s response to the specific communities and individual situations. This results in health inequality. In addition, misunderstanding the values and perceptions of slum dwellers enhances the probability of outbreaks of infectious diseases.
Telecommunications in Harare-by Jerrel Yzer and Tom de Booij
The communication system in Harare is outdated, which means that the availability and quality of telecommunication services is limited. Another problem the city of Harare faces is urbanization: The area and inhabitants of the city of Harare are growing rapidly. Our client, the Telecommunication Operators Association of Zimbabwe (TOAZ) looks after the interests of the operators in the telecom sector. This means they have to provide good working conditions for the operators, but also a good infrastructure for the telecom sector. TOAZ wants to improve the infrastructure of the telecom network, because this should restore the economy and lower the unemployment rate. Strangely, nothing happened.
