1.0.2 Thinking, Learning, Intelligence

Course subject(s) Module 1. What’s on your mind

Thinking, learning and intelligence

This learning experience is all about robots becoming intelligent in the future. But what does intelligent mean? Does it have to do with thinking and learning?
So, before we can begin to understand what we mean by intelligent robots, we must ask ourselves;

  • What is thinking?
  • What is learning?
  • What is intelligence?

Think about this first. You can take notes in the What’s on your mind? Journal.

Like you just did, Canadian computer scientist Yoshua Bengio, Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Operations Research at Université de Montréal,has also spent some time defining “Thinking”, “Learning” and “Intelligence”.

Let’s now watch the video clip below where Yoshua Bengio,  also considers these questions in a VPRO’s Mind of the Universe interview. In this video fragment you can learn from his definitions and compare them to your own. If you are interested in the full interview with Yoshua Bengio, where he also talks about how he gets his ideas as a scientist, click here.

Do his definitions match with yours? Write down the most important differences and overlaps in your journal.
