1.3.1 Introduction to This Module’s Case: BKCity

Course subject(s) 1. Introduction to Managing Building Adaptation

Introduction 1.3

Here you will learn about the module’s case: BK City! This university building has been adapted in 2008/2009 and is now being used by the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (Delft University of Technology). It forms a great example of what can be done to an underused building, and especially how involved actors deal with the challenges that appear during the process of adapting a building.

Let’s start with a visual introduction to the case project. After a fire destroyed the former Faculty of Architecture building back in 2008, the faculty had to quickly move into a new building. This video provides some general background information on how they adapted an old, vacant building into the new Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Now you should have a general idea about what the building looks like to date and what it looked like before. Let’s finish our visual introduction by watching the video: BK City – Managing the Adaptation.

This short, on-site lecture explains the relationship between sustainability and managerial challenges by highlighting some examples from BK City, and shortly explains the module’s case assignment.
