11. Lateral driving behaviour by V.L. Knoop

Course subject(s) 10. Lateral driving behaviour

This lecture explains the gap acceptance theory and different models for motorway lane changing. The Mobil lane changing model will be elaborated most extensively. The number of lane changes and a theory for lane selection will be discussed as well. The last part of this lecture is about merging.

After this lecture you should be able to differentiate between courtesy, mandatory and desired lane changes and you should be able to explain gap acceptance theory and comment on measuring critical gaps. You should also be able to comment on the principles of the Mobil lane change model, lane selection theories, merging and describe the principle of relaxation and comment and analyse on lane distributions.
