13. Evaluation, simulation and guidelines by H. Taale.

Course subject(s) 12. Evaluation, simulation and guidelines

This lecture starts with an explanation of the Dutch traffic (history) and transport policy. This includes the topics; congestion trends in the Netherlands, the mobility policy document and traffic management in the past and now. The next topic is evaluation, where different evaluation types and levels will be discussed, as well as how to monitor data and trends.

This lecture also covers different simulation studies. The next part is about guidelines; how do you perform an evaluation or simulation study? This part also discusses the problems with evaluation studies. In the last part a case study pilot of traffic management in Amsterdam is presented.  In summery this lecture teaches that traffic management is an essential part of the dutch traffic and transport policy and evaluation is common practise in The Netherlands. Therefore The Netherlands has a lot of experience with traffic management and traffic impact analysis. This lecture also teaches that a model is as good as the person using it and that models are not the solution to a problem, but tools to analyse the problem, study alternatives and choose the most effective one.
