2.2.1 Large household appliances

Course subject(s) 2. Electricity use in buildings

Having seen in the previous video that electrical appliances are responsible for a considerable share of residential energy consumption, in this video we will now look at how to calculate the energy use of different types of appliances and how energy efficiency improvements can help to reduce this.

Key takeaways:

  1. Electrical appliances can be categorised as either “white goods” – for example refrigerators, dishwashers, washing machines, dryers, and freezers or as “brown goods” – for example televisions and audio equipment
  2. Energy efficiency improvements have significantly reduced the energy requirements for many common household appliances
  3. Policies such as energy efficiency standards and labelling programs have contributed to these energy efficiency improvements
  4. Energy efficiency improvements with appliances can become visible relatively quickly, because they are replaced much more frequently than for example immovable building assets such as building facades and roofs
