2.3 An Introduction to R

Course week(s) Week 2
Course subject(s) Approaching Credit Risk

In this lesson we start using R, the statistical programming language.

We will see some basic commands for simple arithmetic, variable definition, elementary linear algebra and statistics.

I will assume that you have installed R (and I also suggest R Studio), hence we will start directly with the use of the R console.

The best way to learn a language like R is to spend some time playing with it.
And do not forget to check the manual, as I asked you during the introduction.

Starting from next lecture, we will use R in our risk computations.
Next lecture we will also learn how to load and analyze data.

Ready?!

An Introduction to R

Sorry but there don't seem to be any downloads..

Subtitles (captions) in other languages than provided can be viewed at YouTube. Select your language in the CC-button of YouTube.

Here you can find the script.

Here you can find another link to the R manual.

And this is a very useful reference card, you may want to print.

Nota Bene

In the video I essentially use R Studio, because I believe that its graphical interface is more user-friendly, especially for beginners. Naturally, you can use all the commands in the standard R interface as well. The “big difference” is that plots will appear in new windows. Just try and see the difference.

Enjoy.
