3. Turning Performance

Course subject(s) 1. Flight Mechanics

This lecture covers the basics of asymmetric flight and starts off by describing the method of flying a turn. Next the equations of motion for the horizontal sustained turn are derive. These lead to the load factor which describes the increased weight you feel when going through a turn. This in turn has an effect on the performance diagram.

Next the newly derived equations of motions will be used to do some example calculations, to calculate for instance the steepest, tightest and fastest turn, as well as a rate one two and three turn, used in civil aviation. Next the effect of altitude on various flight parameters is described. Finally the lecture material is summarized and an example exam question is covered.
